personally I dont like ModPodge as I find it never quite dries and remains tacky, depending on what you are doing and if you are happy with a gloss finish, I think PVA is good enough, if you really want a Matte finish you could try something like Glue N Seal Matte here is a link to show you what I mean, not suggesting you buy from here

Depends on what exactly you are trying to do/need the glue for but as Nicky has said, I agee in that I also find M P unsuitable for some pieces as it leaves a slightly tacky surface..which is fine if you are using it as a base layer....acting like a size....but for sealing and finishing then I'm personaly not so keen to use it. In most cases pva glue surfices...and is much cheaper. Bear in mind, however, that pva glue has high water content and, dependingon the grade or type of paper, soaks into and softens thin paper fibres so if you are say, intending on decopatch, then the paper could wrinkle. When using really fine papers and tissues etc I tend to favour Golden Gel Mediums...and when working with more unforgiving thicker gsm paper/card I even use Tacky Glue to get an instant grab. ...but as for whether you use matt or gloss...then really that's up to you and what type of finish you want. Most of the time I tend to favour a matt finish and I'm never that keen on high gloss finish and will also use pva glue as a varnish to get a more subtle satin/semi gloss effect.

I'm basically altering a shoe box and want to put a layer of something to seal it. I'm using 12 x 12 papers approx 120 gsm to cover the box. Thanks for your help, it my first major project and dont want to ruin it at the end! xxx JackieShelley

If you have plenty of paper to spare...it might be worth setting some aside and coating them with different types/finishes of glue/seal so you can look at how it affects the paper and see the finish before you commit to doing the real article.

Mod podge is better to adhere scrapbooking papers to what your altering, it sticks really well and doesnt over wet the paper stock, if you apply it to both surfaces it allows you some time to move it a bit if its slightly off other wise it sticks very quickly. If you want to use it to seal something apply very very thin layers, it doesnt go too tacky that things stick to it this way, I only use matte, if its a small area your sealing you could use diamond glaze over the top of it to add a nice glossy strong finish.
