This is a really pretty effect and one that has been used for many years however these days we should be discouraging people from pushing inedible elements into cake. You can get the same effect by cutting thin ribbons from a gum paste/flower modelling paste , cutting it into small pieces and then allowing the pieces to dry on a curved surface, then push the dried pieces into the coating of the cake.
