Step by Step

1

Cut a C6 card in half. Place to one side.

2

Trim a piece of black cardstock to 12 ½ cm x 9 ½ cm. Cut a piece of red cardstock to 12 cm x 9 cm and layer these two pieces together. Attach both of these pieces to the top of the piece of C6 cardstock. Cut a square of patterned paper to 8 ½ cm x 11 ½ cm and cut corner to corner to create a triangle. Stick onto the front of the layers. This will create the stand up section on the top of the card.

3

On the other half of the C6 card, print your computer generated greeting using 12 pt text. Trim around the wording, and layer onto red and black cardstock leaving around 3mm on each side.

4

To make the base, take a square white card. Lay the card flat in a horizontal position and score from the left edge at 1 ½ cm, 6 ½ cm, 8 ½ cm, 13 ½ cm (which is the centre line of the card), 18 ½ cm, 20 ½ cm and 25 ½ cm.

5

Once all your lines are scored, turn the card over and fold each side section towards the centre on each of the score lines. Leave to one side.

6

Create a chess board using black and white cardstock squares cut to 2cm x 2cm. Mount these pieces onto a half of C6 card trimmed to around 14cm x 12cm. Once this board is stuck together, attach it across the centre of the scored sections created in step 5. Trim to size at the edges.

7

Turn the chess board and base over. Measure the width of your C6 piece of card and mark the width of the card along the centre line (13 ½ cm score line). Using your craft knife, cut in between the marks.

8

Push the layered C6 back piece into the cut created. Apply double sided tape to the front side of the 1 ½ cm sections at the end of the scored card. Pull the C6 card down to come half way across these sections so that it will hold this section in place. Pull down the other 1 ½ cm section and stick over the top, edge to edge. Press firmly together. As you see, the card will fold flat, although we will be attaching 3D items onto the top section, so I would advise to leave it stood up on its base. You will notice that the base shapes itself as you pull it down, and the C6 card will stand up straight in the centre.

9

Cut a black strip of card to 2cm x 13 ½ cm and a red strip to 1 ½ cm x 13cm. Layer together and attach to the front of the base section. Wrap a piece of ribbon around this section and tie in a knot.

10

Stick the greeting to the front of the card base using 3D foam pads.

11

Quill your chosen chess pieces as described in the leaflet which comes in the kit. I used a couple of Knights, a Queen and a couple of Pawns. Arrange and stick these onto the chess board you created on the top of the base using the Tacky Glue. Leave to dry.

12

Create a few hearts from 3mm strips of white from the Chess kit. To create a heart, cut a 4cm strip of quilling paper, fold in half, and using your quilling tool curl the edges inwards and glue the top sections together. Make a couple of black hearts too add a variation.

13

Quill a few loose swirls from 9cm and 5 ½ cm strips of the 3mm quilling papers.

14

Arrange the swirls into the top corner of the stand up section and ‘hang’ the hearts from the swirls. Stick in place with tiny dots of Tacky Glue. Leave to dry.

Hi. I'm Jo and I'm delighted to be a designer for 'do crafts'. I have been crafting for many years, my interest starting with cross stitch and continuing onto card making around 5 years ago, recently being able to have some work published and winning competitions. I started with the shoebox of goodies like everyone does, and this has gradually taken over my house. I love card making and scrapbooking and can't wait to give you all an insight into crafting.
